Silicone vs Rubber vs Felt: Choosing the Right Pad Material
Walk down the floor-protection aisle and you will meet the same three materials again and again: silicone, rubber, and felt. They look interchangeable, but they behave very differently, and the most common furniture-protection mistake is using one where another belongs. Here is how to tell them apart and choose well.
The one question that decides it
Before comparing materials, answer a single question: do you want the item to grip or to glide? A bookcase that must not creep, and a dining chair that must slide out easily, want opposite things. Grip and glide are the two ends of the friction scale, and the three materials line up along it — so the answer to that one question does most of the choosing for you.
Felt: made to glide
Felt pads are dense fabric discs with a low coefficient of friction. Their whole purpose is to let furniture slide smoothly and quietly over hard floors without scratching. That makes them ideal for anything you move regularly — dining chairs, stools, light tables, ottomans.
Their strengths and limits follow directly from that low friction:
- Best for: chairs and movable furniture on hardwood, laminate, and tile.
- Weakness: they let furniture slide, which is a problem if you wanted it to stay put. They also wear down, trap grit, and can peel if not stuck to a clean surface.
Never use felt where you need grip: a felt-footed shelf on a smooth floor is an accident waiting to happen.
Rubber: the all-rounder that grips
Rubber is the versatile middle of the range. It has a high coefficient of friction, so it grips; it is elastic, so it cushions shock and absorbs vibration; and it is tough, so it carries load and wears slowly. That combination makes rubber the default for feet, bumpers, grip dots, and non-slip pads.
- Best for: keeping things in place, cushioning impacts, carrying weight, damping vibration — appliances, cabinets, workbenches, electronics.
- Weakness: that same grip stops furniture sliding, so it is wrong for chairs you move often. Some cheaper rubbers can also mark light-coloured vinyl, so choose non-marking grades on soft floors.

Silicone: rubber’s specialist cousin
Silicone is a rubber-like material with a few standout properties. It grips well, like rubber, but it also handles heat and cold far better, resists ageing and sunlight, stays flexible over time, and — importantly — is generally non-marking. That makes it the choice for demanding or delicate spots.
- Best for: hot or cold environments, outdoor use, contact with light-coloured or sensitive surfaces, and anywhere longevity matters — oven-adjacent trivets, appliance feet, delicate finishes.
- Weakness: usually costs more than plain rubber, and can be softer, so it is not always the best pick for heavy static loads.
A quick comparison
- Want it to slide? Felt.
- Want it to stay put, carry weight, or cushion a knock? Rubber.
- Same as rubber, but hot, cold, outdoors, or against a delicate finish? Silicone.
Mixing materials in one home
You rarely settle on just one. A typical home uses all three exactly where each belongs: felt under the dining chairs so they slide out quietly, rubber non-slip pads under the sofa and the freestanding bookcase so they stay put, silicone feet under the countertop appliances near the hob where it gets hot. Thinking in terms of the job each piece does, rather than buying one material for the whole house, is what gets every item the pad it actually needs.
Avoiding the common mismatch
Almost every disappointment with floor pads is a material mismatch: felt where grip was needed, or grippy rubber under a chair that now judders instead of sliding. Start from grip-or-glide, pick felt for glide and rubber for grip, and upgrade to silicone when heat, weather, or a delicate surface raises the stakes. Get that first decision right and the material almost chooses itself.
