How to Choose the Right Rubber Feet for Furniture
A rubber foot is one of the least glamorous parts on any piece of furniture, and one of the most quietly important. It carries the weight, it decides whether the item grips or slides, and it stands between a heavy leg and a floor that scratches. Choosing the right one is not complicated, but it does reward a few minutes of thought rather than grabbing whatever is in the drawer.
Start with the load on each foot
The first question is how much weight each foot has to carry. Take the total weight of the item and divide it by the number of feet actually touching the floor. A 40 kg cabinet on four feet puts about 10 kg on each one; the same cabinet on a wobbly three-point stance concentrates far more on the feet that do touch. The load per foot drives everything else, because it sets how much contact area you need to keep the rubber from over-compressing and to keep the pressure on the floor low.
As a rule of thumb, a foot should be sized so the rubber compresses only slightly under normal load. If a pad squashes visibly flat, it is too small or too soft for the job, and it will spread, creep, and eventually mark the surface underneath.
Match the diameter to the leg and the load
Diameter does two things: it fills the bottom of the leg so the foot looks and sits right, and it provides contact area. For light chairs and small tables, feet in the 15–20 mm range are usually plenty. Heavier cabinets, sofas, and workbenches benefit from 25 mm or larger, which spreads the load and improves stability. If you are unsure, a slightly larger foot lowers the floor pressure and rarely does harm, as long as it still fits the leg.
Don’t forget height and level
Feet also set the height and level of the piece. If you are replacing worn feet, measure the originals before they compress further, and replace all of them together so the item sits square. Mixing a fresh 12 mm foot with three flattened old ones is the fastest way to introduce a wobble. On uneven floors, adjustable threaded feet let you dial out a rock that fixed pads cannot.
Pick a hardness that fits the surface
Rubber hardness, measured in durometer on the Shore A scale, is a genuine trade-off. Softer feet, around 40–55 Shore A, grip well and cushion shock, but they compress more and can mark soft floors. Firmer feet, around 60–75 Shore A, hold their shape and carry more, but grip a little less and pass on more vibration. Most general-purpose furniture feet sit in the middle of that band for good reason. If grip matters most, lean softer; if load and stability matter most, lean firmer.
Choose how the foot attaches
How a foot fixes on is as important as the foot itself. The common options are:
- Self-adhesive pads — peel-and-stick dots and discs. Fast and tool-free, ideal for light loads and flat surfaces, but only as good as the surface prep and the adhesive.
- Push-in (plug) feet — a barbed stem that presses into a drilled hole in a metal or wooden leg. Secure and load-bearing, but you need the right hole size.
- Screw-on and threaded feet — a bolt or a threaded insert. The strongest option for heavy or frequently moved items, and often adjustable for level.
- Nail-in glides — a small pin driven into a wooden leg, common on chairs.
For anything heavy or that gets dragged around, a mechanical fixing beats adhesive. For a lamp base or a light box on a shelf, a stick-on pad is perfect.
Measure before you buy replacements
Replacing feet is where most mistakes happen. Measure the leg’s outside diameter for a cup or wrap-around foot, the hole diameter and depth for a push-in, and the thread size for a screw-in. Note the original height so the piece ends up level. A cheap set of calipers pays for itself here, turning a guess into a part that fits first time.
